Higher Ground is a multi service non profit designed to provide elementary education and supportive services to Schools, Districts, and County Offices of Education throughout the East Bay.

Our goal is to create educational spaces that empower and impact the way children recieve education and youth development services in the city of Oakland and the greater East Bay.                             Extended Day Early Childhood
             Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Service  
                    Learning (S.T.E.M.S) Teaching Intern

     

    The Early Childhood Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Service Learning (S.T.E.M.S) extended day child development intern is a grant-funded internship position (through June 2013) identified paid holidays apply and other school closure days are unpaid unless prior notification is given for mandatory training. 

    Under the direction of the Programmatic Operations Director, Site Manager, and Early childhood STEMS Coordinator interns will train using specific strategies that work to empower elementary students and families in the areas of early childhood education through STEMS awareness.  As an early childhood educational leader the goal is to support diversity in education through a variety of project based workshop topics including Technology, Literacy, Environmental Leadership, Health & Nutrition, and Peer Leadership.  Interns will attend additional paid and unpaid trainings that give a deeper understanding of youth development, early childhood development, resilience, learning styles and disabilities, behavioral health and classroom management, as well as community schools development and family resources center development principals.  This is a two year commitment on both HG and your part.  At the conclusion of the internship you will be ready to pursue other youth development options, become a classroom teacher, or move forward within HG.

     

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (can include but are not limited to):

    • Participate in all two hour internship trainings twice per month.  Internship trainings are unpaid.
    • Oversee & manage a group of 15-20 elementary students (grades K-5), depending on class size in pre identified project based S.T.E.M.S lessons using HG tools, SAYPQA, and CASP strategies.
    • Train and receive coaching in STEMS Teaching strategies to implement HG S.T.E.M.S in the hood curriculum and HG initiative programs.
    • Maintain all necessary program documentation related to curriculum and data collection directives.
    • Create and implement STEMS project based lessons meeting personal professional training goals.
    • Learn to maintain daily group attendance for your class using HG tools.
    • Understand and follow all after-school policies and procedures.
    • Set and meet professional SAYPQA and CASP goals for yourself and staff within your specialized programming.
    • Learn to meet site based goals as related to STEMS curriculum.
    • Learn to maintain a safe and nurturing environment for student at all times using HG point of service approaches.
    • Learn to collaborate with other Higher Ground team members as needed for strengthen project integration.
    • Learn to create and implement special projects the meet organizational goals for neighborhood development through community gardens.
    • Learn to inspect all program related supplies and materials to ensure program readiness.
    • Learn to keep accurate inventory of all special project supplies and equipment.
    • Exercise creativity in expanding content themes and exposure for youth, including organizing resource materials & designing culturally competent lessons and activities through STEMS project based lessons.
    • Meet with Program Director and Site Manager to discuss students, staff, curriculum or lesson plan feedback and reflection.   
    • Learn how to provide written outlines of STEMS professional development workshops as applicable.   
    • Meet with S.M. to assure get feedback on STEMS lessons and to assure lessons are being delivered free from barriers.
    • Learn to work with youth on planning and implementing presentations to their peers at the end of lessons for student exhibitions.
    • Maintain professional appearance and decorum at all times appropriate for the project.
    • Report any and all team concerns to S.M. including absences that impact specialty programming.   
    • Check emails during assigned timeframes.
    • And other duties as assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • 48 units of post secondary education, or post secondary degree from an accredited college, or passage of Alameda County Instructional Assistants Examination.
    • Demonstrated involvement & commitment to the youth community.
    • Some experience working with young children in the areas of life science and project based learning.
    • Good administrative & child supervisory skills.
    • Must obtain Fingerprint Clearance and TB test as a condition of employment.

    COMPENSATION

                             INTERSHIP #2
    

                Extended Day Science, Technology, Engineering,
                              Math, and Service Learning
                      Program Assistant internship program

    The Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Service Learning (S.T.E.M.S) extended day Program Assistant Internship position is a part-time 30 to 35/hours per week position with hours of operations ranging from 2:00pm to 6:00pm with Higher Ground Neighborhood Development Corp (HG) after school programs.  In partnership with Urban Supplemental Service Providers, LLC this internship will teach participants to plan, implement, and assess   Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Service Learning extended day Programming for the elementary school learner.  The (S.T.E.M.S) Program Assistant Intern will provide services to one of HG 5 comprehensive school based elementary extended day Program. This is a grant-funded position (through June 2014) This position is a consultant placement and is not benefited.  All school district holidays apply and are unpaid unless prior notification is given.  There are 20 paid and unpaid training hours needed to remain abreast of the specialized programming HG provides under District mandates.

     

    Under the direction of the Programmatic Operations Director and Site Manager the S.T.E.M.S Program Assistant Intern will work with Site Managers to assist in assuring that programming is planned, implemented and assessed in the way intended.  Program Assistants are responsible for 15 to 20 students daily along with the over the all flow and success of programming.  This position teaches participants to be second in command in the absence of the Site Manager.   The primary role of the Program Assistant intern is to work in partnership with the Site Managers to implement programming that meets the goals of the site and organization, while working hard with the students and line staff to provide programming to children and families that empower students as leaders and supports diversity in educational experiences through a variety of programming that includes but is not limited to Computers/Technology Literacy, Environmental Leadership, Health, Fitness & Nutrition, Peer Leadership, Competitive Sports, and Gardening.

     

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (can include but are not limited to):

    LUNCH 1:00 TO 1:30

    Interns will learn to master the following areas of content within the 1 year placement           

    • Attendance monitoring and accurate input
    • Academic skill building and homework
    • Attend, occasionally host or team leader meetings.
    • Assure all documentation is filled out by HG Teachers.
    • Maintain relationships with the daytime teachers of HG after school students.
    • Attend all professional development trainings.
    • Lead a specialty class (art, tech, Eat 2 Live, Community All Starz)
    • Assist Site Managers in engaging & networking with school based programming to enhance HG student experiences if applicable.
    • Monitoring Ratio vs. Staffing daily bring concerns and solutions to S.M. immediately.
    • And other duties as assigned.

     COMPENSATION

    • $10 -13.75 Per hour

    

                             INTERSHIP #3

                           Community Schools Extended Day
                                 Site Management Intern

     

    The School Based Services Site Manager (Site Manager) internship position is a ten month full time 40 hours/week position for Higher Ground. The Site Management internship will provide support to one of the five Higher Ground elementary extended day after school programs. 

    Funding for this internship position is year to year.   This position is not benefited until you become a Higher Ground permanent employee. All school district holidays apply and are paid unless prior notification is given.  Position annually begins July 30th unless you are hired within the academic school year and end June 30th for following year unless you are offered summer work. You will maintain your intern status until your two year training commitment is successfully completed, however you will still enjoy the benefits of being a permanent employee with the customary increases and other opportunities afforded to management.


    Under the specific direction of the Programmatic Operations Director and in-direct supervision with Administrative Operations Director the Site Management intern will support the development, coordination and implementation of grant and HG organizational goals at the various school based Higher Ground extended day/after school programs. Along with managing all school based services staff.  The Site Management intern will work closely with the HG Assistant Operations director, School site Principal, daytime teachers, key stakeholders, and school site support staff to ensure the program aligns with the academic day and school culture.  Site Managers are also responsible for the supervision and task assignments for volunteers, mentors, youth workers, and partnering community based organizations.   Management Interns must attend unpaid two hour trainings once per month.

     

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (can include but are not limited to):

    • Attend all unpaid internship trainings two hours per month for 12 months.
    • Learn to supervise all school based services staff including collaborative partners and programming tied to them including payroll.
    • Learn and master participation and facilitation of internal and external meetings for school based service programming during and after school.
    • Develop a keen understand of California and Oakland Unified school district language arts, mathematics, service learning, and science standards to assure program alignment as well as standard operating philosophies of the other HG programs that are managed at your site.
    • Learn and master daily group activities for youth and volunteers are being carried out as planned.
    • Learn to navigate Twitter and facebook pages for your site and special projects.
    • Learn to track and maintain inventory of all programmatic supplies and equipment us HG tools.
    • Learn and master data entry as needed for overall evaluation, regular assessment, attendance tracking (citi span) and programmatic projection purposes.
    • Learn and master yearly and ongoing enrollment process.
    • Learn and master the HG supervision process and documentation.
    • Learn to plan and perform community service work, both site & agency wide.
    • Learn how to build and coordinate extended day community schools collaborative at school site.
    • Learn and master meeting one on one with staff bi-weekly to go over the supervision checklist. 
    • Monitor all lessons planning with after school teachers and program assistants using HG pacing practice and forms.
    • Sit on at least one outside collaborative committee benefiting the after school program, the organization, or your interest as it relates and benefits the after school program or organization.
    • Attend monthly OUSD, BIC, or other mandatory meetings and cluster meeting applicable at your school.
    • Learn the process of providing daily oversight of program set-up and break-down including assuring that all  grade level tutorial binders, student check-in, transition, check-out and daily set-up of program supplies is managed by program assistant van check out and classroom checklist filed out.
    • Learn to prepare and distribute HG site managers and principals reports.
    • Learn and master coordination with Program director for substitute coverage.
    • And other duties as assigned
    • Develop and maintain personal relationships with all students enrolled in the after school program and larger school community when needed.
    • Provide coverage for a class in the event ratio is out of balance.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's Degree, 48 units of post secondary education with four or more years of work experience.
    • Experience working in groups as a team member and lead.
    • Strong computer skills including the ability to quickly navigate the internet, as well as proficiency in such programs as Excel, Microsoft Word, Publisher, and Print Shop.
    • Experience program development, coordination, and community collaboration.
    • Demonstrated involvement & commitment to the school and greater youth community.
    • Ability to work well with people in a variety of work settings.
    • Well-organized, efficient, and ability to work independently.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in group settings.
    • Sensitive to issues faced by children and families.

    S.T.E.M.S. INTERN 2
     
     Higher Ground Neighborhood Development Corp. is looking for interns to participate in Its teacher preparation project focused on increasing Oakland’s quality and quantity of excellent educators who want to learn the practice of early childhood youth development.
     
    We are looking for vibrant youth developers with creative minds ready to learn how to introduce balanced literacy, Si Swun math facts, environmental science, technology, engineering, and service learning concepts (STEMS) to early learners of Color in a structured comprehensive after school setting.Higher Ground teaching interns will learn the soft skills that make an excellent Urban Educator through teaching project based STEMS lessons in one of our four comprehensive after school programs along with the hard skills of lesson plan implementation and effective classroom management/modifications.
     
    This paid internship focuses on youth voice, engagement, interaction, standards based project driven teaching strategies, inquiry based learning, lesson plan prep and analysis, data collection in, environmental education, and behavior modification focused on restorative practices. This two year project will prepare interns for the rigors of the urban classroom by going deep in the practice and point of service standards for good teaching.Hands on learning, on the job training, and a schedule that is conducive to college course work and some teaching credential programs are added features for this paid internship.
     
    Starting range of pay is $10.00 to $14.00 dollars per hour depending on experience, 6.5 hours per week, Mon-Fri and some Sat.Daily report times are 2:00pm to 4:30pm with Wed. or Fri. report times of 12:30pm to 4:30pm for minimum day scheduling.All interns must complete all cycles of training, coaching, and appraisal as part of successful internship completion.A certificate of completion, training hours, letters of recommendation, and topics you are proficient in will be provided for your next youth development journey.
     
    All interns must enter with 48 units of post secondary education, or pass the Alameda County Instructional Assistants examination, or have a bachelor’s degree, and be self motivated with a desire to impact the lives of children and families in Oakland through teaching. This is a twenty month non benefited internship contract period with unpaid summers and school holidays.English/Spanish bilingual individuals highly encouraged to apply.
