Northern Light School was founded on September 11, 1989 by four women with a calling to provide a Whole Child Education for children who would not have the opportunity for a private school setting.
Since its founding, we have embodied the basic premise that it does indeed "Take a Village to Raise a Child." At Northern Light School our "village" is so much more than the community of students, educators, and families who call this school home. We remind our students daily that they are part of the global village of the world, and that because they live in an interdependent global society, they have an obligation to make the world a better place.

Here at Northern Light our elementary basketball teams had their first introductory games as Community All Starz February 4th. Our third, fourth, and fifth graders played against Parker Elementary. They put forth a solid effort, but were over matched by some of the more seasoned ball players in the city. Jeremiah A. was clearly our best player on the floor that day and moved his feet on Defense like he really wanted it. As for our Peewee team, you already Know!!!They played Brookfield Elementary and dominated from the very beginning of the game. Aiden W., Jeremiah M., and Brice P. controlled the boards, led the defense, and scored at will. Meanwhile our Kinder/First Calieb B., Marcus W., and Kalil L., and Nico W. entered the game and held the lead the starters established. The score don’t matter, but know this. Northern light is on the midnap!!!

This weeks student of the month is Spencer G. This young man is starting to emerge as a real leader among our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.
Mario B. is our staff of the month. He has been consistently showing up for work on time and on task once he arrives. Oh! And by the way he has taken on a new assignment. He is currently rocking with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
Shout out goes to To All The Parents who attended the basketball games this past weekend. This was our first year participating in Oakland Parks & Recreation Basketball league as a school and organization. Our children really gave a quality effort and we believe that is a reflection of the effort you all gave to get them to the game. Thanks for your support!
Shout out to Coach Rob who knew when to take the initiative to assist in transporting Higherground children to their away practice. We could not have pulled it off without you.
