Outdoor Adventure program is designed to increase the time students spend in nature-rich spaces as well as increase the presence of youth on the hiking trails of East Bay Regional Parks. Covid 19 has highlighted the inequities around the lack of nature-rich spaces for inner city children as well highlighted the positive impacts nature-rich spaces have on coping with the isolation of the pandemic. A nature-rich space is defined as more than energy efficiency. It is about green spaces, beauty, health, biodiversity, creativity, and social justice. HG’s Outdoor Adventures brings all these principals together in a program that encompasses hiking, mitigation, erosion, and restoration work through service projects that help contribute to the healing of the environment.

Outdoor Adventure programming targets school aged students and youth from various economic strata in Alameda County, CA. School aged children grades k-8 are the most vulnerable populations in the County due to lack of structured access to nature-rich spaces due to Covid 19 restrictions. The opportunity is now to provide school aged children with the initial experiences necessary for introducing climate and environmental sustainability awareness.
HG is uniquely qualified to introduce this program to school districts, schools, and parents in need because we have over ten years of experience taking inner city children on the hiking trails of East Bay Regional Parks from Concord to Oakland. We have experienced naturalist of Color who have been working and hiking the trails of the Bay Area over ten years, strong school and neighborhood partnerships, and programming that increases the use of nature-rich spaces by City kids. HG provides transportation to and from outdoor adventure programming. Students will engage with lessons that increase their awareness of the geography, ecology, and habitat that live within the East Bay Regional Parks.
